Daniel Mundy
Misty, primordial forests of the Northwest, the fringes of the Alaskan wilderness and the rugged Oregon coastline were his playgrounds as a child. With his ever adventurous brother alongside, he took daylong treks through the wooded hillsides of Oregon. They followed streams through moss covered terrain and discovered hidden ponds full of turtles, crawdads, and salamanders. They climbed trees and fashioned makeshift shelters out of fur boughs. These memories shape his emotional response to the landscapes he is driven to depict today.Low light conditions are a frequent element in Daniel’s paintings. “There is that fleeting moment when you strain to see the last light of day, that if effectively captured, can heighten the viewer's emotional response to a painting,” he offers. The use of indirect painting techniques such as multiple layers and glazing are a part of what brings richness and depth to some of the recent work. It’s the illusion of detail that fascinates him. He believes that what is completed in the eye of the viewer can be more powerful than near photographic depiction.
It has taken over 38 years and many miles of canvas to bring him to the confident, measured surety of the work that comes from his brush today. His galleries and collectors have taken notice.
Daniel has a studio in Rocklin, California. He lists these individuals as major inspirational influences in his art and life: Nevin Kempthorne, Nancy Templeton, Vernon Nye and Don Hatfield.
